0.02 Who wrote this FAQ?

This FAQ was written by many people in collaboration. Beginning in spring 1998, it is being maintained and updated by Darcy Partridge. Andy J. Williams was originally responsible for the bulk of it, but much extra material and suggestions come from members of the Friends mailing list and newsgroup.

Many additional comments are included from Friends' Season 1 Supervising Producer Jeff Greenstein (his comments are indicated by "JG") and Friends' Senior Script Editor Alexa Junge (her comments are indicated by "AJ").

Please see question 0.03 for further information about our informants.

0.03 All about our contacts at Friends

We currently have NO contact at Warner Bros. or NBC.

During the first season of the show, then-Supervising Producer Jeff Greenstein contacted the original author of this FAQ and began a two-way dialogue about the show. Over time, an arrangement evolved in which the author would collect questions from the readers of the mailing list and newsgroup, send them on to Jeff who would in turn answer them and mail back his responses. Those "online interviews" have all been rolled into this FAQ. At the end of the first season, Jeff left Friends to work on his new sitcom "Partners" for FOX (which aired for the 1995-96 season) and Senior Script Editor Alexa Junge took over as our contact at the show under the same arrangement.

Later, Alexa turned over the role of contact to Mark Kunerth, one of the writers, but also instructed us that we would no longer enjoy the privilege of submitting questions. We occasionally received advance information about upcoming show titles, air-date, and credits, but this was a one-way flow of data.

Mark left the show (I believe he writes for Veronica's Closet now) and passed the torch on to another. However, communication with our new contact was sporadic. Eventually, it was rare to hear from him and no more useful than looking at the TV Guide website. So we gave up.

0.04 I have a question about X...

If you have a question about the show that is not answered in this FAQ or in the accompanying Episode Guide, you can write to the Friends Web Team at (faq@friends-tv.org), with your question. We will answer your question if we can, but since we can no longer submit questions to the production team, we may not be able to give you an answer.

1.0 Filming, Writing, and other Production Issues

1.01 When can I see Friends?

Friends airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM Eastern/Pacific, 7:00 PM Mountain/Central on NBC.

1.02 All about attending tapings

Tickets for all television shows are free. The only catch is that tickets for popular show are usually "sold out" many months in advance. The minimum age for audience members is 18 years. Shows are taped on Friday evenings.

The company that handles tickets for Friends is "Audiences Unlimited." They have a very helpful (but slow) Web Site at http://tvtickets.com/. The specific page there for Friends is http://tvtickets.com/FMPro?-DB=Web+Site+Shows&-Format=showdetail.htm&-lay=Form+View&show=friends&-Max=1&-Find.

Their site will give you instructions on ordering tickets on the web or via mail, depending on how far in advance the show it sold out.

You can also call them at (818) 506-0067.

I don't know if this is still true, but a couple years ago I also heard that tickets are also available at the at Fox Television Center located at 5746 Sunset Boulevard, one block west of the 101 Hollywood freeway. Tickets become available a week in advance. Ticket office hours are 8:30am - 6:00pm, Monday - Friday.

It used to be very important to call and confirm your attendance plans once you received your tickets. But if the tickets no longer come with instructions to that effect, don't worry about it.

1.03 All about the episode titles (What's 'TOW' mean?)

The episode guide lists all the titles, gives plot synopses, quotes, and credits.

All "Friends" episodes all begin with "The One with...", "The One Where...", "The One At..." ("TOW" or "TOA"). As to why, Jeff Greenstein had this to say:

JG: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Return to Questions

1.04 How far in advance are storylines planned?

JG: "We knew there was going to be a Phoebe/Ursula story [See 3.03] from the get-go. In the case of Paolo, we started that "arc" without knowing exactly where or when it would end up -- the decision to have him make a pass at Phoebe [112] was actually arrived at pretty late in the game. However, an upcoming two-part arc involving Rachel, Barry [Rachel's ex-fiancé and Mindy [Rachel's Bridesmaid & Barry's girlfriend] was conceived of all at once.

"To answer your initial question, then... it varies. "

1.05 All about submitting/acquiring scripts

On submitting scripts:

JG: "We only accept script submissions through agents. Sorry. That's the standard deal."

On acquiring scripts:

AJ: "If you are interested in plot synopses and the like, the best thing would be getting the 'Friends Companion' or to read the Episode Guide. If you are looking for script format because you're interested in writing for TV, there are loads of books that can fill you in. You might also try contacting the Writers' Guild (though I don't know if they'll be much help if you're not a member) or the Museum of Broadcasting in New York."

On the Internet, you can obtain scripts (not necessarily in 'official' TV format) transcribed from the show at Eric B. Aasen's site, http://www.thecfsi.com/

Return to Questions

1.06 How is the stage set up?

This information may only pertain to first season. I am given to understand that this has changed for second season.

JG: "There are two standing sets -- Monica and Rachel's apartment, which occupies the center of our stage, and the coffee house, which is stage right. Those stay up all the time, 'cause they're in every show.

"Stage left is a space where we put our larger 'swing sets' (sets that are only needed for one episode). In any given week, that could be Chandler and Joey's apartment, Carol and Susan's apartment, or the fancy restaurant in 'Candy Hearts' [114].

"Those three sets face the audience. There's additional space for sets off to the side and behind -- if we have to build sets there, we feed the scene live to the audience on overhead monitors."

1.07 All about the theme song

The theme song is called "I'll Be There For You." For information about the Soundtrack Albums, see section 4.00.

There was a great deal of debate on the internet over whether the first line was "So no one told you life was gonna be this way" or "So no one told you that was gonna be this way." Alexa Junge put the argument to rest with the following:

AJ: "the lyric question is 'No one told you LIFE was going to be this way...' But it's not a dumb [question] - there was momentary debate even between Marta [Kauffman] and David [Crane] who didn't want to believe they wrote two consecutive lines with the word 'Life' in them. But they did."

Also: There are only four claps; and D.O.A. stands for "dead on arrival."

The Theme song is sung by the Rembrandts. An extended version can be found on their 1995 album, "L.P." The music is by Michael Skloff and the lyrics by Allee Willis

So no one told you life was gonna be this way [four claps]
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year

CHORUS:
but I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)

Then, the extended version continues with:

You're still in bed at ten and work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast; so far, things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell when the world has brought you down to your knees

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I'm best with you
Yeah!

It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but

CHORUS

1.08 How did they tape the opening to "The One with the Boobies"?

The opening scene to "The One with the Boobies" [113] has Chandler walking in on a topless Rachel. Jennifer Aniston was not topless in front of the studio audience. The scene was pre-shot on a closed set (just the cameraman and director) and a cut-together version of the scene was shown to the audience on show night. (That's where the laughs came from.)

1.10 Was Marcel dancing or was that a tape loop?

One scene in "The One with all the Poker" [118] shows Marcel dancing to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

JG: "It's a tape loop. Monkey's a very talented monkey, but she ain't no dancer."

Return to Questions

1.11 Flubs, gaffes, and improvisations

One reader asked if the pillow falling from the balcony in TOW George Stephanopoulis [104] was scripted or a just wonderful flub by JA.

AJ: "The pillow falling thing evolved on the stage. It may have come from the director, James Burrows or the actors or as a result of all their comic heads working together. I don't know for sure. All I know is we came by to see a run-through and were surprised by the wonderful bit and it stuck.

"Actual flubs are rare, but every so often something unexpected will happen at a taping that's too precious to pass up. In a recent episode (TOW 5 Steaks & an Eggplant) [205] Matt was supposed to go to the phone and say 'Bob, here' but he fell so fantastically, that's the take that ended up on the air."

Return to Questions

1.12 How did the cast/crew feel about the move to 8PM Pacific/Eastern?

AJ: "Last year, the show benefited enormously from following both 'Mad About You' and 'Seinfeld' [at 9:30PM Pac/East on Thursdays]. Once 'Friends' was a hit, the move [to 8PM Pac/East on Thursdays] was a terrific compliment since now we could actually help 'anchor' the night's prime-time lineup. As for the ratings, they've been fantastic. If you all keep watching, we should be okay..."

Not every episode has been released in the USA. Far from it. But the "Best of Friends" top 20 episodes are available in a 4 disc or 4 tape set, (also available separately) with extra footage in each episode, and a copy of the "I'll Be There For You" music video, featuring the cast. A contact at Warner Bros. mentioned that all seasons are being prepared for US release, but no date estimate was available. Why are these "being prepared" when they're already released in other countries? As near as I can tell, the episodes that have been sold for a few years in other countries are the "syndicated" versions. This means they may be missing a few scenes (as compared to the original US versions) and are not necessarily digitally mastered to top quality specifications.

People who have Region 1 DVD players (also known as US and Canadian DVD) or NTSC VHS players (also known as US and Canadian VHS) can order the by clicking the image or link below:

U.K./Europe

Seasons 1 - 7 have been available for a while in the UK, but recently I noticed that a second version of season 7 has appeared there, billed as the "Director's Cut". I suspect these are from higher quality masters and include extra footage and special features. (This may be the tip of the iceberg in terms of what Warner Bros. is preparing to release world-wide). If you are in the UK or Europe and want Friends on video, please buy through this link!

I get a small commission on sales if you use the link in this FAQ. This will help pay the costs of my site and keep it up and available to you!

Australia

Word from Down Under is that Friends videos can be found in "any and all" video stores. These are probably also the "syndicated" versions, unless you find the "Director's Cut" available there as well.

Japan

In late 2001 I was told that Season 1 - 4 are available in Japan.

Mexico

I've been told that videos are sold in Mexico. They're probably available at a variety of stores, but I've specifically been told that Walmart sells them there.

2.0 Character/Actor Information

2.01 All About the Main Characters

David Schwimmer as Ross Geller
Courteney Cox as Monica Geller
Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing
Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani
Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Karen Green
Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay
The main characters are detailed here. Facts about them are followed by a Episode Guide link into the episode from which the information was gleaned.

Ross Geller (David Schwimmer): Ross is Monica's brother. He has a Ph.D. in paleontology and works for a museum [102]. His wife divorced him after she realised/decided that she was a lesbian [101]. Much of season one involved her pregnancy (discovered in episode 102). She finally gave birth to Ross' son Ben [123] and both she and her partner want Ross to be involved with the child to some degree [102] despite the fact that he doesn't really get along with his ex-wife's wife. But that may be changing. He not only gave away the bride at her wedding but he even danced with her new wife. [211] Ross speaks very precisely [103] and is somewhat shy. He had a pet monkey named Marcel [110] who he had to send to zoo when it hit puberty [121].

Ross has been madly in love with Rachel since the ninth grade. At the end of the first season, he gave up on Rachel and began seeing Julie, whom he knew in Grad School and re-met on a trip to China [201]. When he found out that Rachel was interested in him, he broke up with Julie but blew it with Rachel when the list Chandler and Joey helped him make to help him decide between Julie and Rachel fell into Rachel's hands. [208] But they got over their differences and became a couple [214]. However, they broke up because their relationship was stressed by Rachel's busy schedule and Ross's jealousy [312][315]. The next morning Rachel changed her mind and a reconciliation looked likely, until she found out that Ross has slept with Chloe, the navel-ringed copy store girl [316]. Rachel can't forgive Ross but he claims innocence since they were on a break. Because of their strong feelings, they briefly got back together at the beach [325] but it wasn't long before they broke up (Rachel still can't forgive Ross for Chloe, and he still insists they were on a break) [401]. In season 4, Ross met Emily Waltham [414], a woman visiting from London, and after a very hasty courtship, they decided to get married [419]. However, at the wedding in London, Ross accidently spoke Rachel's name instead of Emily's [423][424]. While they still went through with the wedding, their relationship quickly disintigrated. Emily decided she can never trust Ross, so they got divorced.

Ross and Rachel's friendship began improving again, and in the final episode of the fifth season, they got drunk in Las Vegas and ended up getting married [524]. Early in the sixth season that was corrected with a divorced. The only other notable occurance was when Rachel and Ross arranged to be their "backups" if they weren't married by the time they're 40 [625].

By now (start of the 8th season) Ross must be about 33 based on the following clues: We know he is older than Monica (she was 28 as of the start of the third season). In "TOW The Prom Video," [214] Ross's father refers to him as a "college man" just as Monica and Rachel prepare for their high-school Prom. We also know Ross' birthday is in December, as he stated in episode [405].

Monica Geller (Courteney Cox): Monica is Ross' sister. She was a cook at a trendy restaurant, Iridium, on 65th and Broadway [101] until she was fired for accepting a kickback, which was against restaurant policy [205]. She rents the apartment where much of the show's action takes place. Considering her former job, it is quite an amazing apartment. JG suggested that it might be an illegal sublet (see question 2.06), and this was confirmed in "TOW the Ballroom Dancing" [404]. She cannot seem to get her mother to approve of her at all [102][108]. The others consider her to be very bossy and anal-retentive and controlling.

Monica has dated a number of men in the show, usually with bad luck. If she likes them, they turn out to be schleps [101]. If she doesn't, for once her friends love him [103]. And, just once, he turned out to be way too young [122]. And sometimes too old. She dated her father's friend Richard Burke (played by Tom Seleck) who is much older than she is [215] but they broke up [224]. Then she dated Pete Becker, a millionaire in the computer software industry [318]. Eventually, things were going very well for them (he even bought her a restaurant [321]). However, she broke it off when she discovered he's an obsessively stubborn person who doesn't know when to quit [324]. After she left Pete she had a brief catering business with Phoebe [406], but then got the position of head chef at another restaurant (which she had given a bad review, so all the staff hate her) [409]. She briefly dated Richard Burke's son [408], but it was too weird. Recently, she and Chandler ended up in bed together, after spending most of Ross' rehearsal dinner consoling each other [424]. That these two would get together has been desired by fans and hinted by various sub-plots. I.E. [325],[401].

Monica and Chandler continued their romance and tried to keep it a secret. But eventually everyone found out [514]. While in Las Vegas, they decide to get married. While waiting their turn at the chapel, they discovered Ross and Rachel (who were very drunk) have just been married [524]. That derailed everything (they weren't ready anyway) but they decided to move in with each other early in the sixth season. At the end of season 6, Chandler finally proposed again (although it almost didn't happen)[624][624].

Monica (approximately 32 at the start of season 8) stated that she was 28 early in the third season and that she was "25 and 13 months" in "TOW The Ick Factor" [122]. Given the air date of 05/04/95 (late first season), this would suggest a birthdate in 04/69. However, in "TOW the Blackout" [107], which aired on 11/03/94, Joey convinces Monica that Ross is planning a surprise birthday party for her. Given her reaction, it would appear that her birthdate is in late '68. It is difficult to reconcile these unless Ross is habitual in planning birthday parties five months in advance. However, once you remember that TV isn't real life, you realize that not every episode "takes place" on the date it airs. Consider the fact that "TOA The Beach" and "TOW The Jellyfish" have air-dates separated by several months, but the second actually picks up at the very moment that the first left off. Nevertheless, it is clear that Monica was born in late '68 or early '69.

Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry): Chandler was a data processor who didn't care for his job. However, in the middle of the first season he recevied a promotion [115] to be manager over other data processors. Some co-workers thought he was gay, as did some women in college [108]. So did Mr. Heckles, the former neighbor who lived (and died) downstairs [203]. Chandler has a very hard time asking women out [106] as well as breaking up with them, I.E. the horrid Janice [105]. He seems to get stuck with Janice repeatedly [110][114][224-308][415]. Chandler enjoyed a long (by his standards) and promising relationship with Kathy, who was originally Joey's girlfriend but was a much better match for Chandler. Unfortunately, it didn't last [405-413]. Recently, he and Monica ended up in bed together, after spending most of Ross' rehearsal dinner consoling each other [424].

Chandler's mother writes romance novels and embarasses Chandler greatly [111]. He used to smoke and sometimes still has trouble [103][317][318]. He lives with Joey across the hall from Monica and Rachel.

Chandler's age, as of season 8, is 33. This is based on the fact that in episode 407 (4 years earlier) he mentioned he was 29, in episode [407]: "I'm 29. Who needs a savings account?"

Joey Francis Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc): Joey lives with Chandler across from Rachel and Monica. He is an aspiring actor who continually gets rather pathetic roles. These include Pinocchio in a children's production [101] as well as Sigmund Freud in a musical of Freud's life [106]. He was also the poster boy for VD [109]. His almost-breakthrough role (which he messed up) was as Al Pacino's butt-double in a movie [106]. He finally got a break and appeared on Days of our Lives as a doctor [210], until the writers killed him off [218]. He had a part in a movie with Charles Heston [414]. Near the end of season 5, he got the lead in a movie called Shutter Speed [522]. However, when he got on location in Las Vegas for filming, he found the film had been closed down due to lack of funds. So he got a job a Caesar's Palace. Joey's presence in Vegas is what leads to everyone else coming to Vegas for a weekend, which was were the final episodes of season 5 took place[523][524].

Joey is kinda slow intellectually. He is quite active with the females, but never has a lasting relationship.

Sometime during the 8th season, Joey should turn 34, since he was 28 as of "The One Where Joey Moves Out", a 2nd season episode). This is confirmed in episode [619] when (during a discussion of Spring Break) it was mentioned that he was 13 in spring of 1981. That makes him 33 in spring of 2001, and again on schedule to turn 34 in season 8. However, there are inconsistencies. In episode 701 it's mentioned that he's 31. And the next year in episode [802], Chandler reminds Joey that he is 32. So which episodes do you believe? (Hint: None of this is real, so you don't have to believe any of them if you don't want to.)

Rachel Karen Green (Jennifer Aniston): Rachel was very much a suburbs woman, who, until the start of the series, had never held a job and had always lived off daddy's money [101]. At the start of the show she had just left Barry, her husband-to-be, at the altar and ran to (and moved in with) the only friend she could think of (at least the only friends who wasn't invited to the wedding), Monica [101]. It took her a while to get into the groove of living and working in the big city. She worked as a waitress until mid-third season, when she quit [310], then got a job at Bloomingdale's [311]. She now works at Ralph Lauren [517][518].

Rachel has dated many guys (much to Ross' chagrin), most notably Paolo, an Italian man who could barely speak English [107-112], and much later, Joshua, a well-to-do young customer at Bloomingdales [413-420]. For all of the first season, she was oblivious to Ross' crush on her. At the end of the season Chandler let it slip and she decided to go for it. However, by that time Ross had found a new girlfriend (Julie). When she got drunk and told Ross that she was over him, he decided to leave Julie. However, a list [208] of pros and cons about Rachel that Ross was using as part of his decision between her and Julie upset her and she turned away (but, of course, later forgave him and they got together). However, they broke up because their relationship was stressed by Rachel's busy schedule and Ross's jealousy [312][315]. The next morning Rachel changed her mind and a reconciliation looked likely, until she found out that Ross had slept with Chloe, the navel-ringed copy store girl [316]. Rachel couldn't forgive Ross, but he claims innocence since they were on a break. However, at the wedding in London, Ross accidently speaks Rachel's name instead of Emily's [423][424]. While they still went through with the wedding, this event planted the seed which eventually led to their divorce.

Rachel's mother envied her free life, and for that and several other better reasons has divorced her husband [211][222].

Rachel should be 31 or 32 by the end of the 7th season, even though the writers claim she only turned 30 in episode [714]. My figure of 32 is based on several things: We know her birthday is on May 5th, because Gunther asked her in episode [405]. This is further confirmed by the fact that she has had several birthday parties near the end of several seasons [124] [222] (and seasons usually end around May). Rachel stated that she is 28 in episode [416] and therefore would have turned 29 later that same season. I suppose you could argue that she was rounding up to the nearest full year. But hey, women don't do that.... especially women like Rachel. Maybe you could say season 4 was a bit out of sequence, and ep 416 was after her birthday, in spite of the fact that in season 1 and 2 her birthday didn't come until the last few episodes of the season. After all, in season 7 she had her birthday in ep 714. But even with this, there's been at least a one year discrepancy.

Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow): Phoebe is way out in left field most of the time. Often the cause of strange looks and shrugs from the others, Phoebe left home early in life after her mother committed suicide; she moved to the city where her albino male roommate committed suicide; she got her act together when she discovered aroma-therapy [101]. She is a masseuse [112] and also sings at Central Perk, often about death. She is very spiritual (not necessarily in a religious sense). She cleanses auras [101] and believes she can sometimes read thoughts of people or sense the presence of departed friends or family. She once was inhabited by the spirit of an old lady who died on her massage table [211]. She had a friend whom she believes was reincarnated as a pencil [108]. She lived with her grandmother [104] for much of the show, but recently her Grandmother died [513]. Presumably Phoebe still lives in the apartment or home she had shared with her.

Her sister, Ursula Pamela Buffay, is a waitress at Riff's, a restaurant featured in 'Mad About You' [102], but they do not get along [116-117].

Many plots that focus on Phoebe involve her complicated family relationships. In addition to Ursula, we have had episodes that centered around her husband [204], her search for her father [209], her brother (Frank, Jr.) [305], Frank Jr.'s wife and home-ec teacher (Alice) [318], her discovery of her birth mother [325][401], and the surrogate pregnancy she went through for Frank, Jr. and Alice [411]-[503], and finally meeting her father at her grandmother's memorial service [513].

I don't have much info to confirm her age. But we know she's over 31. In TOW They All Turn Thirty, [714], there's a flashback (how long back, we don't know) to Phoebe's "30th birthday," where Ursula shows her a birth certificate proving she's really 31. [714].

Jennifer Aniston

by Ken Gidley

Jennifer Aniston, who plays Rachel on Friends, was born in CA (the Valley, so yes she's a Val!), and raised mostly in New York. Her father, John Aniston, is an actor on "Days of Our Lives", so young Jennifer was around acting from an early age. Her godfather was Telly Savalas.

Jennifer has Greek ancestors, and actually spent some time in Greece as a child, before settling in New York because of her father's acting career (specifically he landed a role on "Love of Life"). Her family name was originally Anastassakis (yes, that name was used for the Greek wedding in episode [724]). She first acted at around age 11, as part of the Rudolf Steiner School's drama club. Jennifer says that she was always interested in acting, but it Rudolf Steiner's free-spirited atmosphere that encouraged her to make it her career.

Jennifer started her professional training at New York's High School for the Performing Arts as a drama student. She graduated in 1987 (she is 26). She appeared in Off-Broadway productions of "For Dear Life" and "Dancing on Checker's Grave", before her first TV role on "Molloy". Other TV shows graced with her presence include "The Edge", "Ferris Bueller" (the TV version), a recurring role on "Herman's Head", and even some guest appearances on "Quantum Leap" and "Burke's Law".

Jennifer is also an artist. At age 11 (busy year), one of her paintings was selected for display in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. She still spends much time on art projects, including charcoal drawings, clay sculptures, and paintings.

Jennifer was born on February 11, 1969. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping, and getting closer to nature. She currently lives in Los Angeles. In Summer 2000 she married Brad Pitt.

The following additional information was taken from the January 13, 1995 edition of the Blade-Citizen Preview, page 3 article titled, "Jennifer Aniston having fun with NBC's 'Friends,'" Written by Cheryl Lavin, Tribune Media. (Yes, some of this is out of date, since the article was written in 1995. But since I'm quoting someone else's work, I cannot change it.)

Vital statistics on Jennifer Aniston:

Lisa Kudrow

by Ken Gidley

Lisa Kudrow was born on July 30, 1963 in Encino, California, (Yes, she too is a Valley girl! Oh-My-God) and was raised Tarzana, CA. She attended Vassar College in New York and graduated with a B.S. in Biology. She planned to follow in her father's footsteps (a famous headache expert) and moved back to L.A. to do medical research. She would most likely be doing research now, if not for the encouragement/inspiration of her brother's friend, Jon Lovitz (of Saturday Night Live fame).

Lisa tried out for The Groundlings, a famous improvisational theater group in L.A., but was initially rejected due to her lack of experience. She was referred to a well-known comedy instructor, Cynthia Szigeti, to learn the improvisational trade. While attending this training, she met and became friends with Conan O'Brien, an unknown at the time. In 1989 she went back to The Groundlings and was accepted as a member of the troop, thus fulfilling her dream of being a writer/performer.

In addition to Phoebe on "Friends", Lisa has played other roles on TV including Ursula, the ditzy waitress, on "Mad About You"; a recurring role on "Bob"; and guest appearences on "Cheers", "Coach", "Newhart", and "Flying Blind".

Lisa spends her free time performing with the improv group Transformers and with The Groundlings, where she also teaches. She also played tennis in high school and college, and is known as a pool shark. She apparently grew up with a pool table and has mastered many different trick shots.

Courteney Cox-Arquette

by Ken Gidley

Courteney Cox, who as we all know plays Monica Geller on "Friends", is originally from Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to New York City after graduating from high school and did some time with the Ford modeling agency, where she appeared in such glamorous roles as TV commercials for Noxema, Maybelline, and even the New York phone company.

Courteney made her acting debut in 1984 on the daytime soap "As the World Turns", and later that same year, she was in Bruce Springsteen's video for "Dancing in the Dark" (she was the girl pulled from the audience to dance with 'The Boss'). Her most familiar TV series role was as Michael J. Fox's (or rather Alex P. Keaton's) girlfriend Lauren on "Family Ties". Her other TV appearances include being a regular on "Misfits of Science" & "The Trouble with Larry", guest-starring appearances on "Murder, She Wrote", "Seinfeld" (where she played Jerry's pretend wife), and HBO's "Dream On", several TV movies including "Prize Pulitzer", "Battling for Baby", and "Curiosity Kills", and even a mini-series, Judith Krantz's "Till We Meet Again".

Courteney has appeared in several movies, including the wildly successful "Ace Ventura: Pet Dectective" with Jim Carrey, and some not as successful films including "Down Twisted", "Masters of the Universe", "Cocoon: The Return", "Shaking the Tree", "Mr. Destiny", "The Opposite Sex and How to Live with Them", and "Blue Desert". Her stage work includes "King of Hearts" at the Tiffany Theatre in L.A., where she starred with Michael Spound.

When Courteney is not working (and it doesn't seem like there's much of that), she enjoys decorating and remodeling homes. Her birthday is June 15, 1964, and she lives in Los Angeles.

Courteney dated Michael Keaton (of "Batman" fame; not to be confused with the character Alex P. Keaton played by Michael J. Fox) for a couple of years. They broke up and Courteney began dating (and later married) her Scream costar, David Arquette.

David Schwimmer

by Daniel Goerlich

David Schwimmer, son of two lawyers, was born on November 12 (year ?) in Queens/NY and raised in Los Angeles. As a teenager attending Beverly Hills High, he portrayed Otto Frank in "The Diary of Anne Frank." After studying Speech/Theatre at Northwestern University (he received a B.S.), he co-founded (along with seven classmates from Northwestern University) the Lookingglass Theater, an ensemble of actors, writers and directors. There, he acted in "West," "The Odyssey," "Of One Blood," "In the Eye of the Beholder" and in "The Master & Margarita." Additionally, he directed "The Jungle" (6 Joseph Jefferson Awards), "The Serpent" and "Alice in Wonderland" (performed at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland).

On television, he appeared in "L.A. Law," "Blossom," and as host in "13th Annual Jost For Laughs Festival" and "Saturday Night Live." In "The Wonder Years," David Schwimmer portrayed Michael, the boy who married Kevin's sister Karen.

Matthew Perry

by Michael J. Berquist

Matthew Perry is an only child. His mother Suzanne, a former Canadian TV anchor, is married to Canadian anchorman Keith Morrison and has four children, and his father, John Bennet Perry, has also remarried and has a daughter. The elder Perry is perhaps best known to TV viewers as the guy in the "Old Spice" commercials.

Perry, when growing up, was orginally supposed to become a pro tennis player and was good enough to become the #2 ranked junior player in Canada for a time. However, a disasterous debut match in the US ended that dream and launched him into his father's profession: acting.

Perry auditioned for the movie "A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon" and won a part beside the late River Phoenix. Perry, like many of his co-stars, Perry has done his share of failed TV sitcoms such as "Boys Will Be Boys", "Home Free" or "Second Chance". He has also appeared on shows like "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Growing Pains".

Before he got the part of Chandler, Matthew Perry had been disgusted by the lack of good parts on TV and had attempted to write a sitcom pilot with a friend of his for NBC called "Maxwell's House". The show's premise (a bunch of twentysomething friends hanging out together) was interesting enough that NBC expressed interest, but decided to pass on the show in favor of something called "Friends". The rest, as they say, is history.

Matt LeBlanc

by Ken Gidley

Matt LeBlanc (aka Joey Tribbiani on "Friends"), at age 8, enjoyed a brief career as an amateur motorcycle racer with aspirations of becoming a pro. However, his mother put the kibosh on that and redirected his talents elsewhere. Matt was trained in carpentry and tried to do it with an artistic flair.

After high school graduation, Matt travelled to New York City to make his fortune. By 1987 he had appeared in several national TV commercials, including ones for Levi's 501s, Coca-Cola, and Doritos. He appeared in a Heinz catsup ad that won the1987 Cannes Film Festival's Gold Lion Award.

Matt began formal acting training in 1988 and within a year found work as one of the stars of the TV series "TV 101". He moved to L.A. and subsequently has appeared in several TV series ("Top of the Heap", "Vinnie & Bobby"), the TV movie "Anything to Survive" (with Robert Conrad), and a guest appearance on cable's "Red Shoe Diaries".

Matt appeared in his first feature film in 1994, a movie entitled "Lookin' Italian" He is also scheduled to star in the last installment of "Rebel Highway", a series of remakes of famous 'teen angst' movies shown on cable.

Over the last 10 years, Matt has developed a passion for photographing landscapes which has taken him to various parts of the world including Amsterdam, Switzerland, Germany, & Vancouver, as well as to many places in the U.S.

Matt's birthday is July 25, 1967. He currently lives in L.A., with one of the first friends he made after arriving in Los Angeles: his dog Lady.

2.05 What does the cast think of all the fan stuff on the Internet?

JG: "I'm the most Netaholic member of the Friends family, though several of the other writers and producers also read the mailing list, as do a few people from Warner Brothers. If I come across anything especially amusing or provocative, I tack it on the bulletin board next to the writers' room.

"For example, somebody recently quoted a line from Mad About You in which Ursula mentioned her brother. Well, if Ursula has a brother, so does Phoebe, and we writers need to be aware of that.

"There was also a post on the newsgroup which confidently asserted that the character of Carol, the pregnant lesbian ex-wife, was 'based on Friends Executive Producer Marta Kauffman.' Marta really got a kick out of that one, as did her husband and two kids.

"I don't think any of the cast members are wired as of yet, though I did circulate the Drinking Game to them. They loved it, and expressed amazement that people knew the show that well."

2.06 How did they all meet, and how did Monica get that apartment?

If you want the answer that was eventually revealed in episode format, watch episodes [306]and [404]. Late in the first season, the producers of the show gave us their concept of the "back-story." It was a little different at that time than what was revealed later. Below is their description, intermixed with additional comments to point out some of the differences between fiction and... other fiction.

By the way, "JG" stands for 1st season producer / writer Jeff Greenstein, and "AJ" stands for producer / writer Alexa Junge.

JG: "O.K., here's the quasi-definitive answer as I know it, as we writer folk have discussed it over the course of the season...

"In the pilot, we established that Monica, Rachel and Ross all went to Lincoln High School together. Monica was fat; Rachel was popular and possibly bitchy; Ross was a nerd. Rachel says that she and Monica were close, but in the time since, they've drifted -- enough so that Rachel didn't think to invite Monica to her wedding.

"We also established that Ross had a crush on Rachel back then; she knew this, but thought of him as 'Monica's geeky older brother.'

"During the making of 'The One Where Nana Dies Twice' [108], Schwimmer and Perry wondered if Chandler and Ross might have gone to college together. We writers agreed that it might be nice for two of our other characters to have a history together, so we wrote it in.

"Therefore, my guess is that when Monica graduated college and was looking for an apartment, Chandler (who was living with his first roommate Kip -- the one Joey is jealous of in 'Dozen Lasagnas' [112]) alerted her to the fact that an apartment was opening up across the hall from him. Monica found Phoebe through a roommate-matching service and moved in.

"One of the ways we've justified -- to ourselves, at least -- this amazing place Monica lives in (on an assistant chef's salary!) is that it's probably an illegal sublet. Several plot lines revolving around this fact were discussed over the course of the season, but never amounted to anything."

(After a while, this aspect of the plot was changed / solidified. Alexa Junge added: "Rachel and Monica live in a rent-controlled apartment Monica's grandmother left her (not Nana - the other one)").
(This was later confirmed in episode [306], when Monica tells Joey that the apartment is her grandmother's, who's moved to Florida. Also, in episode [404], Monica and Rachel almost get kicked because of the illegal sublet.)
JG: "Anywaaaaaay... When Kip got married, he moved out and Joey (who Chandler probably also met through a roommate-matching service, or by putting up flyers at the laundromat) moved in. Around the same time, Phoebe's grandmother needed some kind of taking care of, so Phoebe moved out of Monica's to live with her. This is another element we talked about a lot over the course of the season, but it never found its way into a story.

(This was clarified in episode [306], where Chandler places an advertisement in the newspaper, to find a new roommate, because Kip has moved out. Plus, Phoebe reveals that she has been slowly moving out because she can't stand Monica's incessant neatness.)

"As for the timing of the events surrounding Ross's divorce, that's something we've consciously avoided getting into. The more you think about it, the more troublesome it becomes: Was Carol already involved with Susan when Ross got her pregnant? We invite viewers to figure this one out for themselves..."

(Episode [306] also reveals that point at which Carol starts spending a lot of time with Susan.)

2.07 All about Marcel

JG: "Marcel is actually played by two female monkeys named Monkey and Katie. Both appear in 'Outbreak' and have made several appearances in television shows, movies and commercials over the past few years.

"In fact, when we were initially casting Marcel, we were told that no capuchins were available because all of them were in Malta shooting 'Outbreak.'"

2.10 Where in New York City do the characters live?

Visit the Friends apartment building, several other Friends sites, the Cosby brownstone, the Nanny townhouse, and more, on an exciting two-hour bus tour of TV locations in Manhattan. $15 per ticket. For further information on times and group rates, e-mail tvtour@aol.com or call (212) 410-9830. Try http://www.sceneontv.com/ as well.

Someone who lives in New York City sent in the following info, which Goran Gudinge then built into a map. Please remember that this information is about scenes of NY streets that frequently appear in the show. We are not saying that you will actually find Monica's apartment inside that building, nor will you find "Central Perk." Those are sets at Warner Bros. Studios. This is just to inform where certain footage was obtained. These map locations are much further apart from each other than the fictional "Monica's apartment" and "Central Perk."

Also:

AJ: "Ross lives across town [from Monica's apartment]. Phoebe lives nearby."

AJ: "It's 'less than a hundred steps' [from Monica's building to Central Perk] because Joey has counted them."

2.11 Are Ross and Monica Jewish or Christian?

They may be a bit of both. I can't find the original source of this information, but I recall reading once that one of their parents is Jewish, and one is Christian. I don't remember which was supposed to be which. Their Jewish heritage most recently was focused on in episode [710]. Also, in episode [216], when Ross, Monica, and Richard are about to go into the Gellars' house, you can see a mezuzah (traditional Jewish doorway ornament) on their doorframe. And in episode [410], when Phoebe sings, "Happy Hanukkah, Chandler and Monica," only Chandler counters with, "I'm not Jewish."

However, we've also seen plenty of years when Monica decorates a Christmas tree... so...

2.12 Was "The Girl who Hits Joey" (episode [515]) really Punky Brewster?

The actress was Soleil Moon Frye; and yes, she used to play Punky Brewster, in the sit-com of the same name.

2.13 Is Rachel's last name spelled "Green," or "Greene"?

Who cares? She's not even real!

But seriously, it's been spelled both ways. The credits of any episode where her parents appeared list their last name as "Green." But in "The One With The Invitation," Ross's envelope to Rachel, as well as her RSVP note, spell it "Greene."

Shall we assume that Ross and Rachel know how to spell her name better than the people who prepare the credits? Okay. But either way, try to remember that people just sit around and make up this show, so don't get too hung up things like this.

Return to Questions

2.14 What are their middle names?

We don't yet know them all. Here's a few: Rachel's is Karen [111]. Joey's is Francis [711]. Chandler's is Muriel [805]. Monica's starts with E [221]. It could be Eustace, but that might actually be Ross's. Once person e-mailed saying it's Erika, but I haven't been able to find that in an episode yet. Ursula's middle name is Pamela [714], and in that same episode Phoebe mentions that she doesn't know her middle name. If anyone out there knows more info, and can tell me what episode it was revealed in, please do.

2.15 Why did Anita Barone leave the show after only one episode as Carol?

Anita auditioned for one of the 3 female leads in the show, but didn't get the part. But the producers did offer her ther recurring character of Carol. However, after one episode as Carol, she decided she was looking for a more full-time role, so she went on to look for other opportunities.

2.16 What is special about the transvestite waiter (waitress?) in TOW Chandler's Dad?

Oh, honey, lots of things. The credits billed that role as "Waiter in Drag," and listed the actor as "Alexis Arquette." People with a keen eye may remember that back in episode [613] there was another small part (a customer in Central Perk) played by "Lex Arquette." When questioned, an unofficial source at Warner Bros. said yes, they are one and the same person, and yes, he is related to Courteney (through her marriage to David Arquette).

2.17 Who is Regina Phalange?

Phoebe uses "Regina Phalange" as a psuedonym (fake name). We don't really know whether Phoebe made the name up or borrowed it from someone. She's used that name is episodes [524], [720], and [804].

3.02 Is Chandler gay?

In episode [108], one of Chandler's co-workers mistakes him for being gay while trying to fix him up with someone at work. This started a lot of speculation that Chandler was repressed in some way. By now, this issue has been put to rest. As JG put it way back then:

JG: "Oh, come on. Chandler's not gay. Though back in college, there were a lot of girls who thought he was..."

3.03 All about the Phoebe-Ursula Connection

Phoebe and Ursula are twin sisters born on February 16 (year unknown). Lisa Kudrow plays Phoebe on Friends as well as Ursula on Mad About You. Both characters are similar in their air-headed nature (though Phoebe is far more developed owing to it being a larger role than Ursula).

JG: "The Phoebe/Ursula thing (which precipitated the Helen Hunt/Leila Kenzle [crossover from Mad About You]) was necessitated by the fact that Lisa Kudrow was playing two different roles on back-to-back sitcoms. Rather than just pretend Mad About You didn't exist, it was decided to make Phoebe Ursula's twin sister, and deal with the issue head-on in the 2/23/1995 episode. [116][117]

Other episodes which Ursula appears in are: [303] [401] [513] [614] [714] [806]

Return to Questions

3.04 Will there be a follow-up to the Joey-Phoebe Kiss from 'Two Parts'?

The original answer from the production staff in 1995 was:
JG: "Probably not. We were actually quite surprised that people thought we were opening up the possibility of a Joey/Phoebe romantic thing with that kiss. To us, it was a wonderful one-time thing between two friends who care about each other very much."

However, slowly over the course of the show, more has developed between Joey and Phoebe. They kissed again in TOW Barry & Mindy's Wedding [224] when Joey needs kissing practice. It was platonic. Then, at the end of season 6 [625], we find out that Joey is Phoebe's "backup," and they plan to get married if neither of them is hitched by age 40. Season 7 and 8 have contained many more signs of deepening friendship and hints of future developments. For example, Phoebe has made several more (presumably clairvoyant) allusions to them being "together" in the future; Joey gave Phoebe her "perfect kiss" in TOW They All Turn Thirty [714]; Joey proposed marriage to her when he thought she was pregnant in episode [801].

3.05 How could Monica not remember Ross was allergic to kiwi?

3.06 Who is Ugly Naked Guy?

AJ: "Originally, he was pure conjecture - based on various Ugly Naked Guys many of the writers had lived across from (especially those who'd lived in New York city). However, we received a letter from a woman who grew up in the building you see in the stock footage shot of M,R,C & J's building who said there was, in fact, an authentic Ugly Naked Guy living across from her and 'how did we know?' Life is crazy, huh?"

In "The One With The Flashback"[306] we find out that Ugly Naked Guy used to be Cute Naked Guy, but then her started putting on weight.

3.07 What do W.E.N.U.S and A.N.U.S. stand for?

W.E.N.U.S. = Weekly Estimated Net Usage Statistics

A.N.U.S = Annual Net Usage Statistics

JG: "As written in 'Stoned Guy' [115], it was 'Weekly Estimated Net Usage Statistics'. Matthew said 'Systems' instead of 'Statistics', but we decided to let it go because basically the joke was over as soon as he said the word 'WENUS'.

"Then, when we did the WENUS/ANUS call-back in 'Two Parts' [116 & 117], we decided to go back to 'Statistics' 'cause it makes more sense -- knowing full well that sharp-eared 'Netters would probably catch us at it."

Return to Questions

3.08 Am I crazy or did the apartment numbers change?

Initially, Chandler and Joey's apartment number was 4, and Monica and Rachel's was 5. Shortly after production began, it was decided that the apartment building where much of the show takes place was too big to have upper apartments with numbers as low as 4 & 5. The last episode where you can actually see those numbers in use was the sixth episode, "TOW the Butt." Then in the next episode, "TOW the Blackout," we don't get a good look at their doors, but we see that Mr. Heckles (downstairs) has apartment number 8. Immediately following this, in "TOW Nana Dies Twice," the numbers have changed to 19 (C&J) & 20 (M&R).

3.10 What was the name of the Female Empowerment book in The One Where Eddie Won't Go (ep 219)?

3.11 Who is Frankie, and why does he want me to RELAX? (from TOW the Tiny T-Shirt)?

Ross's old T-shirt in this episode said, "Frankie says RELAX." Anyone who has to ask this question obviously isn't from the same generation as our Friends on TV. So on the one hand, I could say, "If you were old enough, you'd understand." Which would be true in more ways than one, if you get my meaning. [But if you did, you wouldn't have to ask this question, would you?]

On the other hand, I suppose I owe a better answer to all you who think the world didn't really get interesting until 1990. "Frankie" is of the '80s music group "Frankie Goes To Hollywood," and Relax is one of their songs.

3.12 What happened to the chick and the duck? We never see them anymore!

I think the writers for the most part are conveniently ignoring the chick and the duck. Having them around all the time would get old really fast. Remember how fans got tired of Marcel? Anyway, I did some checking, and as far as I can tell, the last time both the chick and the duck appeared was in episode 620. But the duck also appeared (sans chicken) in episode 702.

3.13 Did I see Ian Thorpe, Australian Olympic triple-gold medalist, in TOW Ross's Library book?

I don't know, did you? I don't know what Ian Thorpe looks like. But I received one email from a fan who claims that Ian Thorpe was in the background of a scene at Central Perk, while Rachel and Phoebe talked to Joey's girlfriend (Erin) about how the relationship was going. Supposedly, Ian was sitting at a table with a brunette woman in a green sweater.

5.07 How do I contact the cast and/or crew via the net?

You don't. None of the cast have publicly known eMail addresses. There has been a lot of talk in the past that people have made net sightings of cast members on services like America Online, etc. These are just posers or people who actually have the same names.

There was once a article in which Jennifer Aniston was quoted as saying that she's gotten into surfing the net. That may be so, but no email address has surfaced and I don't expect on to.
